2020 IEEE ICDM Outstanding Service Award: Professor Dimitrios Gunopulos

The IEEE ICDM Outstanding Service Award is the highest recognition for service achievements in Data Mining, and is given to one individual or one group who has made major service contributions that have promoted Data Mining as a field and ICDM as the world's premier research conference in Data Mining. The 2020 IEEE ICDM Outstanding Service Award goes to Dr. Dimitrios Gunopulos, Professor of Informatics and Telecommunications at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens.

Dimitrios Gunopulos is currently a Professor in the Informatics and Telecommunications Department at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. He has a long history of promoting ICDM and the field of data mining. He has been part of the ICDM community as an author since 2001. He has served as a General Co-Chair (2010), as a Program Co-Chair (2008), and as a member of the Steering Committee.

Professor Gunopulos serves the broader data mining community as well. He has served as a Program Co-Chair of the ACM SIGKDD Conference on Knowledge Discovery and Data Mining (KDD 2006), the IEEE International Conference in Data Engineering (ICDE 2020), and the European Conference on Machine Learning and Principles and Practice of Knowledge Discovery (ECML PKDD 2011) as well as a General co-Chair of the 17th and the 18th SIAM International Conference on Data Mining (SDM 2017 and 2018). He has been an Associate Editor of the Knowledge and Information Systems journal, the ACM Transactions on Knowledge Discovery from Data, the IEEE Transactions on Knowledge and Data Engineering, and the IEEE Transactions on Parallel and Distributed Systems. He is serving in the committee for the selection of the ACM SIGKDD Dissertation Award, and has served on the ECML PKDD Steering Committee.

Professor Gunopulos has made significant contributions to the research areas of data mining, databases and data science, with a focus on developing fundamental data mining algorithms and on developing real-time data analysis techniques for complex streaming data. He has published over 200 research papers in top-tier venues with an H-index of 73 at Google Scholar. He has graduated 13 PhD students, several of them now being faculty members in major research universities.
